Online travel articles and city guides are a great way to learn about a destination before you visit it. They let us know what to expect, what to do and how to plan a trip. Quite often, we need to revisit these articles to freshen up on specific details like where that lovely little restaurant or iconic building is located.

When we travel we are sometimes burdened with buying data plans or searching for Wi-Fi signals to access this information. Then you have the added step of finding it on a map (Google or print). It’s a bit time consuming.

That’s where this new travel app GPSmyCity is becoming increasingly useful and handy. Interestingly it’s not just any other travel app. It’s changing the way we look at apps and articles by combining the two to create travel articles apps.

It is available on both iOS and Android.

GPSmyCity

GPSmyCity is basically a platform where tailored, personalized articles and guides are converted into their very own app, which can be accessed even when you are offline (paid version). They cover over 700 cities in the world with 1,000s of articles on wide range of topics and categories.

It’s got everything from art galleries walking tour in Bangkok and art museums in Tokyo to finding the best places to eat French desserts in Paris. The beauty of it is that these articles and guides are user generated and not by some magazine or big tourism company. So they are personal but also accurate and professional (otherwise GPSmyCity doesn’t include them on their platform).

Benefits of Travel Article Apps

I know you’re thinking, can’t I just view the same articles online on a website/blog for free? There is Wi-Fi almost everywhere and to be honest, data plans these days are so cheap. So why GPSmyCity?

Here’s what we think and hear:

  • There are thousands of travel articles in one place
  • Access to detailed offline city maps for over 700 cities
  • Location bookmarking on map
  • Each location/destination that the author mentions in the article is mapped out with GPS coordinates with precise directions
  • Routes clearly displayed on map
  • They have a “FindMe” feature, which displays your exact location and tracks your movement – much like Google Maps
  • All walking tours are fully functional in an offline mode, thus no data plan or roaming is needed when traveling to foreign destinations
  • You can create your own self-guided walking tour
