Fitting to its name, The Deck by Arun Residence, is truly the life of Chaopraya River as the restaurant overlooks a magical scenic view that features the majestic Wat Arun (Temple of the Dawn).

Getting There

Best way to get to The Deck, which is housed by Arun Residence is to take the BTS to Saphin
Taksin and then grabbing a ferry to pier 8. From there it’s a slight 5 minute walk to and inside soi Pratu Nokyung. You could also take a taxi directly but trust us when we tell you that you’ll be spending a lot of wasted time in traffic.

When we reached The Deck, we were actually kind of disappointed because it didn’t look like what we saw on other reviews and websites. The view of Wat Arun (temple) was blocked by another building on the right and we expected a more spacious deck, but luckily later we found out at the end that there were 2 extra floors.

Ambiance

We were welcomed by a warm staff and since it was raining and water was splashing on the ground floor deck, they offered to seat us on the 1st floor. Both floors were dimly lit against a backdrop of a cloudy sky and subtle reflection of ambient lights that danced in the river below. This gave a very cozy, almost romantic feel to the place.

1st floor

As mentioned, there are several floors to the restaurant, with the roof deck being for just drinks and had the best feel as the view of the river and Wat Arun was unobstructed. On the way up winding stairs to the top floor, you’ll also come across a private room that also seems like part wine cellar. I’m guessing you have to book room in advance.

The Deck is well known for its sundowner atmosphere where it boasts dramatic sunsets across the Chaopraya River. Unlucky for us, we had just missed it so we plan on going back another day to better capture the amazing scenery.

Us and the gorgeous view

As we sat the waiter brought us the menu of drinks, which had a decent selection of cocktails, beers, wines, mocktails and soft drinks. I opted for the hoegaarden beer while Kanika had a carafe of white wine.

Next we ordered our meals. The menu consisted mainly of Thai fusion dishes that combined authentic flavors with a modern twist. We had the grilled beef and eggplant, which had a sweet and sour taste. I’m used to a more spicy palette so I wasn’t a 100% sold on the food but for most foreigners, it would be perfect.

We had also ordered shrimp spring rolls that also contained glass noodles and vegetables. It was semi dry and lacked flavor. Our third dish was a tom kha kai (chicken galangal soup), which is traditionally quite spicy but this version was a bit too sweet (due to the excess coconut milk) and lacked spices.

The good thing was the portion serving was just right for the price and if you’re taste matches their flavors, then it is definitely value for money.

Wow Factor

Overall, The Deck by Arun Residence is a great place for a semiromantic night out where you can enjoy a few dishes and drinks with an amazing view. Be sure to reach before sunset and definitely don’t miss out on going to the top deck, as we almost did had it not been for one of the staff who directed us there.
